There are a number of designs you can choose. The first and most obvious is the set up whereby the bed is on the top and below is a sofa which pulls out into a double bed. This is practical and creates a large reading area. If you're still reading with your child this is an excellent option.
If you kid is a little older, reading on their own and has homework, then there's one option which leaps out. This is the design in which there is a bed on top and a comfortable seat and work area underneath.
With this design the seat will pull out into a single bed, so wonderful for either sleepovers, or for just lounging around reading. The work area is quite small, but this does not seem to be a problem. The configuration means that the futon can be used as an extended work area, if they're referencing books or maps then with a swivel desk chair they can simply spread their materials over the futon and write at the desk.
There is a third feature which is similar to the set up with a work station, but in this area there's storage instead of a desk. Having a separate desk may appear more realistic at first glance. This is an adult way of looking at the setup. Discuss this option with your children and you will possibly find that they are not so keen on it. By having drawers and storage space below the top bunk it makes the area underneath less fun. If you prefer to maximise your storage area then you might be better of with a mid height bed with storage, rather than a bunk bed with futon?
Which ever bunk bed with futon design you opt for it is significant to discuss it with your children and to make sure that they are happy. It is also a good idea to invest in a few new bedding and accessories to make it that little bit more special and personal.
